Our first stop of the day is the picturesque town of Pienza. Although it’s worth noting for both its location and the beauty of its architecture (Pope Pius II rebuilt Pienza in the 1400s as the “perfect Renaissance town”), the major draw is its artisan food, wine and craft stores. Your tour leader will introduce you to the city’s world-famous pecorino cheese, ceramics and local Tuscan delicacies like wild boar. In your free time be sure to visit the town’s church and soak up some more views over the rolling hills of Val d’Orcia.
Pienza is included under the area’s UNESCO World Heritage status, as is the next stop on our Tuscan day trip; an organic, family-run farm.
We’re confident you will fall in love with this certified organic farm, a place that takes its status so seriously, that the animals receive only homeopathic medicine. You’ll meet the staff on a short, guided tour of the farmyard and chat with the resident cheese-maker. Then pull up a chair for a truly Tuscan feast.
We can’t share the menu because all ingredients come from the farm itself and these change daily depending on what’s in season. We can guarantee the finale though; a full tasting of the farm’s best sheep and goat’s milk cheeses alongside homemade honeys and jams. You will have a choice of red or white wine to wash your meal down (it is Tuscany, after all) and the farm owners will drop in and out, answering any questions you have; just one benefit of having small groups of 15 people or fewer.
Tuscany is famous for its castles, and on our day trip from Rome you’ll visit the best. Perched high on top of a hill, Montalcino Castle offers perhaps the best views in Tuscany. With special, extended access you’ll climb the lookout towers and patrol the walls led by your tour leader.
Oh the wine! Tuscany is world-famous for its wines and none more so than Brunello di Montalcino. You’ll sample some of the best when we visit an award-winning vineyard for a guided tour of the vines and wine cellar, plus a guided tasting. Go on, we dare you to leave without a bottle or two stashed in your bag.
With so much to see in this incredible region, stating that we’ve found the best of Tuscany is a bold claim, but one we’re sure you’ll agree with after a fabulous day of castles, wine, cheese and perfect hill towns. Our Tuscan day trips from Rome offer a truly Italian experience that will leave you hankering for Tuscany long after you’ve returned home.
